I was told Richard Strauss played, at least in his youth? I can't find confirmation of this anywhere, but it seems surprising if it is not true. In terms of modern composers, I know Esa Pekka Salonen studied horn. I still can't quite forgive Brahms for not writing a horn concerto. Perhaps someone will discover one, some day ;).
