Having played Mahler with most of the conductors already mentioned,
there is reason enough for having many recordings and many
interpretations. My one regret is never to have played Mahler with
Bernstein but that is somewhat remedied by his DVDs with the VPO.

The Barbirolli with the New Philharmonia has Nicholas Busch on first
(recently retired from the London Philharmonic as the longest serving
first horn in London).
There is a horn entry missing on this recording - try and find it! -
because when this entry was re-recorded on another occasion, EMI then
went and re-inserted the original hole.

Perhaps Hans can help on this one. I have a rather old vinyl (mono)
with the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera conducted by Hermann
Scherchen. There is no recording date and, naturally, no
acknowledgement of the Solo Hornist in the scherzo. As this is really
the only distinguished playing in the performance, I would love to
know who it is - Freiburg perhaps?

Quirky but good performance are to be found in a unique set I
discovered in a CD shop in Kaunus, Lithuania with the Moscow
Philharmonic and Kondrashin.

My favourite? Chicago and Barenboim from the Cologne Triennial 1997.
Clevenger, of course but significant and distinguished by Herseth's
playing on his last tour of Europe. It's on DVD and worth it to see
Barenboim striding through the orchestra to present Herseth with a
rose detached from the conductor's bouquet. Herseth cheekily upturns
his trumpet and Barenboim pops it in. Delightful.
