Tina, I too am Long Island based and am unable to make as many trips to Boston/Arlington as I used to. So on the advice of some other LI players I brought some horns to Buddy for cleanings within the past year. In one case for my benefit he spent an evening taking pictures of all the green gook that accumulated due to massive dezincification in the valve cluster of one of he horns and swabbed it out, dipped it again, swabbed it again, until he got the job done. In another he spotted a leak that no else had identified in prior servicings. Of the [I believe he said 4,000] horns he has worked on, most have been factory instruments, so he'll readily admit that he is more familiar with Conn 8ds and school band instruments, but as far as I'm concerned he's very very thorough, a hell of a musician (why such a massively talented mandolin player / classic instrument collector who actually bonded with Bill Munroe and gigs all over the place didn't end up a luthier is beyond me), and is n ot above calling someone like Ken Pope for advice if he runs into a problem he can't handle (he told me this happened on one occasion). If you do go to Buddy (or anyone else), just make sure you run lots of valve oil through the horn to coat its interior post cleaning. If you want more details, get me on Facebook. Best, LD ________________
Does anyone have any knowledge about a repair shop called Buddy's Brass in Long Island, NY? This guy is about 5 minutes from my house, has an ultrasonic cleaner, and according to the 3rd horn player in one of the bands I'm in is good. I just don't know what this guy defines as 'good'.
