I know from the "sub"-communist people“s liberation army of China"  
that there were
no rank signs on their uniforms, but everybody knew the commander &  
the commander of his commander
& the general - by name.

And in the orchestra ? How often adresses a conductor (commander) the  
members not by name, but by
e.g. 2nd horn or 3rd trombone or the violins ..... but we even forget  
the names of these conductors
(commanders), if we knew them before, which was not the case always &  
was not necessary either.
