Hello Valerie, Evidently, it's even older than Mr. Phillips suggests; both Wiktor Ewald [27 Nov 1860-16 Apr 1935] and Ludwig Maurer [1789-1878] wrote music in the Romantic style, intended for brass quintets from the mid to late 1800's.
In Maurer's case, the instrumentation was 2 trp., 2 hrn, tuba [or Eb tuba]; in Ewald's case, the instrumentation was 2 trp., Eb tenor horn [or horn], Bb alto horn [or trombone] and tuba. Dr. Edward Tarr has written historical notes on both of these composers, which can provide additional information.
