I believe the instrument Michael Mulcahy played is a tenor tuba. Although I
couldn't find his email address to ask directly, on the 1995 CD
"Orchestral Excerpts For Bass Trombone, Tenor Tuba, Etc" he recorded this
track, #16, and the album photo looks like the instument in the broadcast:
