Emory has it right. Aside from the Britten premiere, as I said in my
posting, if it is Elayne Jones playing timpani (and I'm sure it is) in the
film, it was the summer of 1949. I wish it were John Graas in the student
ensemble, since it would be really nice to see him in action, but it is not
possible given the 1949 date.

It looks like 1949 must be the year for this film. One confirmation would
be that 1949 is the year Britten's "Albert Herring" (the opera that's being
rehearsed in the film) had its US Premiere.

>From a section of the bio I wrote about my uncle John Graas:
In June 1940 he received a scholarship to the Tanglewood camp at the
erkshire Music Center and studied there with Willem Valkenier, principal
orn with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he received detailed study.
n September 1941 Graas became a member of the Mozart Festival Orchestra,
onducted by Thor Johnson. In September 1941 he received notice of a
cholarship to the Juilliard School of Music, but a month later he turned
own the Julliard scholarship to perform as first horn with the Indianapolis
ymphony. . Graas left classical music for a brief time when in May 1942,
e became a member of the Claude Thornhill cool bop big band. He recorded
everal songs which featured him, such as "Buster's Last Stand" and "Lullaby
n the Rain". Then it was back to Tanglewood under Koussevitsky. ..
So, John Graas was there the summers of 1940 & 1942. There is a horn
player
n the far left in the shot of about 4-5 horn players, where I can't make
ut the whole person, so I'm not sure, but he may be in this film.
