In all the back and forth, I am surprised no one had pointed out that Bizet most certainly did not write "schmetternd"! As Hans has pointed out, the original was probably cuivrée, meaning brassy. The finest interpretation of this section I ever heard, live or on records, was by Sir Thomas Beecham and the RPO. He managed to get his horn section to play each note as a bell tone, even in the quiet sections. He also took the movement slower than is common, to allow that articulation to speak, and it really did sound like carillon.
