Dick, I have one of these. The serial number is located on the second valve casing facing the levers. The second valve is actually the third one down from the top of the valve assembly. My serial number is 294565. Except for worn lacquer, my horn is in good shape , and plays well. This is the type supposedly played by John Graas. The Olds label is stamped on the outside circumference of the rim. I have the original Olds guarantee card. The type is rubber stamped in the card as follows:" O-49 Olds Five Valve Nic. Silver FRENCH HORN". The lead pipe, bell and first branch are nickel silver. BTW, mine came with one of the (in)-famous orange-brown molded cases.

Olds 5-valve single B-flat Hi, horners I received a message from a horn player in France, inquiring about an F.E. Olds 5-valve single B-flat horn. It is obviously based on the design by Sansone. I don't have any direct experience with Olds horns so all I've been able to do is piece together a few facts:http://www.rjmartz.com/horns/Olds5Valve/ The owner states that there is no serial number to be found on this horn. Where would it normally be located? Unfortunately the photo of the bell label is unclear, but the owner states that it says FE Olds & Son, Fullerton, Calif. I might guess that the peculiar rectangular finger plates would help establish a date of manufacture. They don't appear in any of the photos of other Olds horns I've been able to find. Any info would be appreciated.
