It is an exciting time for those of us working on this years'
symposium. There will be much more content up on the web site soon.
Here are a few significant reasons you will want to be in San
Francisco this summer. More to come.

1. The scheduled release of a new book, "Dennis Brain, A life in
Music," will spark a day of Dennis Brain activity, including over an
hour of playing clips that will consist of Brain playing pieces you
have never heard him play before. These clips, collected by one of the
authors, are only part of a larger collection that is held privately
and may or may not ever be released commercially. These are tapes (and
one new video) of performances made outside the US in various places
featuring composers heretofore unknown in Brain discography. There
will also be at least one horn there, thanks to Andrew Clark, that was
owned by Brain and a playing demonstration by John Ericson of some of
the models that he played on.

2. The Hollywood studio salute is taking shape, with interviews with
major artists and an inside look at the studio scene. This is a
premier of a documentary years in the making. There will also be some
new 'film related' horn ensemble arrangements and tributes to the
great players of the past, all brought together by one of the all time
great studio players, Richard Todd.

3. Of course there will be many new works premiered and the
extraordinary playing of our featured artists and Contributing Artists.

4. Genghis Barbie will be playing at the Pier 23 Cafe on Thursday
night. This is a special unofficial symposium event that is open to
the public and completely in the hands of the young women from New
York. We are all looking forward to finding out what they are going to
do. You can plan to end your "half day off" at the wharf for dinner
and a show.

5. And of course the largest collection of exhibits of horns and horn
paraphernalia in the world. Meet the people who make the horns, the
mouthpieces, the mutes and everything else. Peruse the largest
collection of horn music that you will ever see for sale in one place.

It is important to note that we have going right now some important
time values in regards to registration and dorm rooms. Staying in the
dorms has always been the traditional way to get the true feel of a
workshop. It is also the most inexpensive and convenient way to
attend. Hanging out with other participants is an important part of
any gathering such as this, and taking advantage of the dorm
atmosphere makes that truly possible.

We have acquired a limited number of dorm rooms at the price of $40
per person per night, double occupancy, including breakfast. This is
an extraordinary deal, as many of you who have stayed in San Francisco
in the summer can attest. This is for Monday through Friday night. We
will be ending the workshop on Saturday at an earlier hour than the
other days to accommodate people that need to catch flights home, or,
if they are staying on, perhaps move to a hotel for the rest of their
stay in the area. Secure luggage areas will be supplied to make this
transition as simple as possible.

The thing is, that these rooms are only available until February 15th.
After that date, we will have to return the rooms that aren't sold or
pay for them, which we cannot afford to do, so if you are planning to
come and enjoy the workshop as so many of us have over the years, by
staying in the dorms, you need to register and make your room purchase
as soon as possible. I'm afraid the days of having rooms available
right up to the time of the symposium are over in many schools. These
rooms are sold by the school as a business, and they are very tight
about how long they will make them available.

But they ARE available now at the IHS website. Enjoy the convenience
of the close proximity to the Creative Arts Building where the
symposium is being held by making your reservation now. You can choose
your roommate or have one assigned by us.
