Steve, where to place the chair on stage ? Within this small space between the box for the stage inspector, located near the stage opening and the space where actors walk in & out ? No way to place a chair.
Sometimes, producers will place the player behind a tree in the middle of the stage, perhaps on a rock, with access from behind, walking in from below the stage and up a dark stair, very little light, just space for a small monitor to follow Siegfried´s movements. You have to remember, you have to play ONLY, when Siegfried has the horn on his lips. There is no time to lick your lips before. See it & play. Ooops, I could tell you stories. Just one: Sawallisch´s last Siegfried here in Munich, I was in the pit for act 2 & 3, my colleague Siegfried Machata ready for the call on stage. We arrived at this particular spot, the clarinet climbing .. fermata ... cue from Sawallisch .... nothing .. another cue .. nothing .. a third cue, I reacted & played the first solo, audience started getting noisy, second solo ... audience laughing ... then the answer from the stage, played by my colleague perfectly until the high c at the end. I also reacted perfectly by stoping playing - so not top have a "stereo long call". What had happen ? This production requested the we play the call inside a "cave" (below stage) following the scene on a monitor; we also had to anticipate our playing a bit because of the distance. But the TV camera broke, so even the stage kapellmeister could not give cues & Sawallisch´s cues were worthless because invisible to the player on / below stage. Such situations prove if you possess real good nerves, it proves if you are a real professional. ############################################################ Am 28.01.2011 um 07:15 schrieb Steve Haflich: > For me this is an odd and problematic performance! > > The long call is performed offstage (as the on-stage Siegfried mimes on > a valveless animal horn).
