I just listened to this... I wonder if he's studying horn with someone or whom? I know if he were my student I would be working with him on the following issues: the octave jumps that are not cleanly played (shows a lack of pivoting to get clean slurs), his intonation (someone pointed out how flat he plays). He does fill up the horn, and I do like his sound, but he really strained to reach the Bb and sounds almost like he's pinching to get it to speak. As I'm listening to it for the second time, wow! is he flat! I think it could be an issue with slide placement, especially if he's not studying privately and does not know how to tune both sides of his horn, or maybe since it's a live performance, he could have suffered some performance anxiety. Those are a couple of my thoughts. I think he's got some potential, he's not the worst high school hornist I've heard.
Anyone listen to how unbalanced the band is at the beginning? One of the clarinets sticks out like a sore thumb and is very out of tune. I don't think he's playing an Alex 103, I think more than likely a Conn 8D, Reynolds Contempora or a Holton H179 since he's a high school hornist. I looked to see if his school was listed, but it wasn't. --- On Tue, 3/8/11, Brian Brown <[email protected]> wrote: From: Brian Brown <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Hornlist] Take a wild guess! To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011, 9:05 AM It sounds like he's playing a nickel Alex 103 with his hand stuffed too far in the bell. He's a good player, but the flat pitch is a dead giveaway that the hand position is slightly off. > > Message: 1 > Date: Sat, 5 Mar 2011 11:43:46 -0800 > From: valerie wells <[email protected]> > Subject: [Hornlist] Take a wild guess! > To: horn list 2 memphis <[email protected]> > Message-ID: > <[email protected]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 > > This is a clip of a high school senior playing Strauss.
