For me, it is players who put their heads down in their music and forge
ahead at whatever speed they think is right, and either don't notice or
don't care that they have got out of time with the conductor. The problem is
often worse in the wind - at least the strings usually follow each other,
but the issue can be completely deadly if one of the string principals
doesn't follow the beat, because then the entire section follows the
principal!

If an orchestra is short of horns, I don't mind welcoming a returning player
into the orchestra and shepherding them through the process of getting their
lip back. If they are experienced but just out of practice, then the chances
are that they will quickly become effective and valued members of the
orchestra.
