I haven't had the wrong horn experience myself, but I'm going shopping soon and
have talked with my current teacher about it, some. His answer was
thought-provoking.

Everybody has (or should have) a sound that they want to achieve in their
playing, but when they try a horn, they may find that the horn makes it
difficult to get the sound they want. So the right horn would be the horn that
(for that player) most allows them to sound the way they want.
