I just finished going through the same panic about not being able to do
those darn fast afterbeats in the first act. I could not do it to a
metronome or with the recording. Luckily, the first horn (it was a
small orchestra, reduced to two horn parts) had no problem and by
tagging along with her, I found myself doing it. It felt like a major
accomplishment--to learn something new at age 56. Ultimately, what I
found myself doing and which worked well was thinking of it in 2,
stomping my toe (not my foot) on the first and third beat (at this
moment I don't remember if it was in cut time or 4/4, so I'm talking
about the first and third quarters), and it magically got into my
brain. I could even do it myself when the first horn missed a
rehearsal. The strings have to do it later, and they almost managed it
by the second performance.
Good luck.
