I think the great advantage of the Paxman compensating tubas is that they
are much, much easier to play than the "real thing"

The first few times I played tuba it was on these and I had grown accustomed
to them, to the extent that when I was told that for the next concert we
would be using a set of Alexander tubas I was more than apprehensive. When
they arrived they were, as I expected, much more difficult to handle -
except for the tone quality which was much superior, and, of course, the low
register on the F tuba was much more secure. By the end of the gig I much
preferred them. (Too much "much" in this paragraph, but you know what I
mean.)

I think the compensating tubas have their place - if you're turning up to a
gig for one rehearsal and concert in a scratch band, they're easier to
control and likely to be less problematic.

All the best,

Lawrence
