It's like Wendell said, it's not a zero sum, all or nothing thing. I believe a variety of techniques can be artfully applied to get the effect one is looking for. I believe that one person can achieve beautiful results using one technique while another can achieve equally beautiful results using another. I think it's foolish to decide that there's only ONE correct way to start & stop every note, or to do anything else on the horn for that matter. I seems it would be advantageous to learn or at least experiment with a variety of techniques, methods, etc. In the process one may discover that a new or different technique serves the individual's needs better than their old standard. We're all different. Just because one thing works great for one person, doesn't mean it's going to be best for everyone.
Just look at all the different ways there are to develop the embouchure. One of our list members is having a great time trying something Bill Ver Meullen taught him at the symposium last week. He's been writing about it on FaceBook. I'm fascinated by this, even thought I can't come close to even comprehending what he's talking about. BE worked for me. For others, something entirely different could be their "fix." If anyone is having trouble articulation, with range, with phrasing, or any other aspect of horn playing, why not explore alternative approaches? I'm a firm believer in the old saying: "It it works, it's correct." Val ----------------- Not to pour fuel on the fire (opening gas can), but Kendall Betts, no mean horn player, does teach stopping notes with the tongue, at least to beginners and amateurs at his horn camp. I may have misunderstood, but that's what I heard. I prefer a more tapered ending, but who am I to argue?
