The only cup muted horn part I have ever encountered is in Broadway Curtaintime, a band medley of older showtunes. This piece was on the program when I was in the Kentucky All-State band many years ago and, thinking I would actually need the mute, I rushed out to buy one. I couldn't understand why I was the only member of the section who brought one to the first rehearsal.
