For sight reading, you look as far ahead as necessary to ensure that the
notes don't surprise you when they arrive and you have to play them. That
depends on the individual player. Generally a bar or so is sufficient,
though you might want to make it more in fast 1-in-a-bar pieces.

If you have practised the piece to the point where it is ready for
performance, the notes shouldn't be able to surprise you anyway, and you
should only really be scanning the music for confirmation and reminders of
what you already know of the piece, so the question doesn't really arise so
much in this case.
