Dear Sharon, There are two sources of information on this subject you should access. The first is Randy Gardner's book on the subject that was published recently. I think it is "Mastering the Low Register" or something to that effect. Perhaps someone else can clarify this. My son has mine and he is away at college. The other source is a video on horn playing produced by the Yamaha Corporation. L.William Kuyper, asst. principal of the New York Philharmonic, speaks about playing in the low register. In my experience with many students over the years, I have observed students struggle with the low register because they fail to keep the corners of the embouchure and the chin muscles firm. Many other factors come into play, but these two aspects are very important.
