I am uncomfortable placing Zamfir in the same garbage bin with the other notemongers you mention. True, he has churned out marshmallow versions of some of the lowest forms of western music, but some of his early works are interesting musically and technically.
There are two albums of Improvisations for pan flute and organ (played by Marcel Cellier). The pieces are Rumanian in flavor. With unusual time signatures, with tempo and pitch bending, these pieces are highly musical and captivating; the doina style in particular stands out. Some of these pieces appear on very cheap CDs that also have bigger-band Rumanian folk music. I agree - dump the pan flute movie music, but check out the improvisations.
