In my experience pits occur on lacquered areas. Pinholes trap corrosive chemicals (sweat), and a pit ensues. If a lacquered area develops pits, get the lacquer stripped. I have heard that Lemon Pledge protects unlacquered brass. The best preventive action is wiping the horn after use.
