Bill, I am the only one in my entire section of ten horn players who
uses not only a different make (8 of the section play Alex 103 but our
youngest member plays a Yamaha but will get his Alex 103 soon) - my own
horn-, but also the only silver & gold plated horn. It is a nice
contrast, but also it does not matter much if just the principal plays a
different horn, as the principal is different anyway by his or her very
different qualification (different tasks to mount than the rest of the
section, definitely.). These are two different professions. Has nothing
to do with any down looking or down qualification of the section
players, absolutely not.

And, Bill, have a look on my web page & find the pictures of
MySiegfriedHorn and be surprised. It is a treasure.

The Schmid Horn, why does it match with the Conn ? Engelbert Schmids
sound concept is very different to e.g. my concept coming from the
Viennese School or e.g. Gerd Seiferts concept , also coming from an
F-Horn school (Doescher in Hamburg was his teacher).

But the main vowel in Schmids sound concept is produced similar to
"uuh", not so far from American English, and he is a strongly advocating
for the near exclusive Bb-horn use. So it matches. But nevertheless, I
cannot understand Phil, as he produced a super warm & mellow real horn
sound all the times I could listen to his playing live.

May-be, it still is not the horn but HIM.

As a collector of odd horns, I'm always trying to get a gauge on horn
comparisons. For myself, I make two categories, and only compare horns
within each category. Some horns are tweaked to make them good
symphonic instruments. The horn I put in this category is the 8D and
its clones. It seems every manufacturer makes a big, usually
