Farkas wrote that one should clean out the horn once a week. I hardly have time any more to do ANYTHING once a week!
But it can be helpful. Ever hear the story about the time the late Herman Dorfman (SF Symphony) was playing an orchestral solo during a concert and his horn suddenly stopped up 100% and ceased producing any sound whatsoever? "Oh...ha ha...just a little DIRT," he remarked at intermission. Moral: Use more breath support. .... and/or soap.
