That is a very interesting concept. I no longer conduct very much, but when
I do, I find my richest resource of musical interpretation is the body of
musicians in front of me. It doesn't make a difference whether the
musicians are 5th grade students or pros. They are all unique musicians who
can contributes ideas. On a collective basis, there is no way that I will
have the entirety of knowledge and background that an entire musical group
will have. To me, music is a team sport. My job is to facilitate a group
in such a way to produce a cohesive unit using the instrumentalists' skills
to give a pleasing performance. In that way we all can grow. The
relationship changes as the maturity and skill of the conductor and the
instrumentalists change. If I micro manage all the musical ideas presented
in the music, I only get what I ask for and no more. I know the musical
product can be so much more than that.
