I agree with most of your ideas because all of you are expert.
Context:
Some horn players always feel they are playing too loud. Trumpet players play too loud.
If the horn player suggest that they should player softer and the trumpet player suggest to player louder.
How could you make the decision?
Conductor is a conductor. Not a dictator. He should make the final decision. If the rehearsal time is very limited i think too much ideas waste the time. I only think what a conductor need to do is to hear and give response to the player's playing. He could be a nice person.

Hello, CCC and Hans and everyone else!!
Now, I am not taking any sides on this subject, but......
Any conductor, whether s/he is a student, amateur, or even a polished
music played' with only the motions of the hands are part and parcel of each other!
And it always shows, what s/he did, in the beginning!
The ability to 'describe' the music verbally, and the ability to 'get the
professional, unless s/he becomes 'comfortable' on the podium by being forthright and positive in what s/he wants the group to do??
And if one is a student, how is s/he going to become a polished
well-stated explanations of what is wanted by the leader, who is obviously in charge!! Or am I seeing some sort of an argument getting started, here??
No dictatorial 'concept' here, so far as I see it! Only firm and
things come from agreeable unity!!I hope not!!
Let the conductopr conduct, and let the players play, and see what good
