You are probably referring to a microphone specifically supplied for use with a MD recorder. Most microphones, particularly the better quality ones, will still need a pre-amp of some kind.

Actually mine doesn't need a mixer or anything. You can just plug in a
regular Sony MD Mic and it automatically can adjust the levels for you (or you can
adjust them yourself).
