There's actually a piece for beginning strings called "March of the Metro Gnome" by Fred Hubble. This must obviously be about the same type of fellow.
Along with all the devices that are now available, I've come across a fellow of diminutive statue who is very good at helping with keeping rhythm of the various stuff I'm doing correct. I've fortunate that I live in a large city because I don't think you'd find metrognomes in rural areas.
