Because those pieces requiring the A-crook are in tonalities
where the fingering on a Bb-horn is like finger-breaking or
twisting e.g. Aria no.9, op.45, No.22. But today´s Viennese
horn players do not use (or just rarely) the A-crook or the
Bb-sticker. They do not need it, as playing such pieces on
the F-horn is much easier than toi adapt to the horns
different characteristics when using the A-crook, nor need
they the A-crook for easier high register, as their high
register is stupend (listen to Thomas Joebstl or Wolfgang
Tomboeck !!!).

Please correct me if I'm wrong - Vienna horns are
traditionally played in F with the most common alternate
crook being pitched in A alto.

If this is correct, why A alto?

Why not Bflat alto?
