There is a tradition of having conventions in interesting travel destinations, e.g., a bunch of American doctors getting together in China just because they want to go there and have it be tax-deductible. Nothing wrong with that, IMHO.
The only problem is if the location causes people who would otherwise go not to, and in greater numbers than the destination attracts.
