One of the pieces really close to my heart is a small Sinfonia by Heinrich 
Schütz originally set
for 5 viols.

As the recorder player I also am, I added two solo parts improvising over the 
melodies and the
harmonic foundation. I have previously announced it in its version for 7 horns 
in the original key
of E minor. That setting is pretty tough for the upper horns.

So last year I transposed it down to B minor for low brasses. In that context I 
also made a B
minor version for horns in F. 

The two solo parts still are difficult, but their range is more manageable. The 
5th tutti horn
goes really low, but still can be played on a single F horn. That part is 
notated in treble clef
as well as in bass clef. If you direct a young horn ensemble without 
outstanding soloists, the
original 5 tutti parts can be played on their own. 

The tutti parts are not technically difficult, but each player must be able to 
hold his/hers own
part, at there is a lot of implied counterpoint in the setting by Schütz.
