One of the pieces really close to my heart is a small Sinfonia by Heinrich Schütz originally set for 5 viols.
As the recorder player I also am, I added two solo parts improvising over the melodies and the harmonic foundation. I have previously announced it in its version for 7 horns in the original key of E minor. That setting is pretty tough for the upper horns. So last year I transposed it down to B minor for low brasses. In that context I also made a B minor version for horns in F. The two solo parts still are difficult, but their range is more manageable. The 5th tutti horn goes really low, but still can be played on a single F horn. That part is notated in treble clef as well as in bass clef. If you direct a young horn ensemble without outstanding soloists, the original 5 tutti parts can be played on their own. The tutti parts are not technically difficult, but each player must be able to hold his/hers own part, at there is a lot of implied counterpoint in the setting by Schütz. The pretty important preface and the setting for F horns can be found here: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/YorkMasterBBb/files/Heinrich%20Sch%80%A0%A0%FCtz%20Jesu%207%20Worte%20Am%20Kreuz%20in%20E%20minor/Low%20brass%20versions/ If you arent already a member, please follow the directiond of my extended signature.
