Yes. I agree. Good handstopping technique would be an
alternative at least for the higher horns. And for the low
horns ? The quality of the stopping mutes is not much
relevant, as they will not be heard anyway, if they play
stopped notes below c1 (first line below staff). But keep in
mind, that hand stopping requires skill on the F-side &
transposing skill at least for E. (this is said to the list,
just enforcing your words)

All fine recommendations and good information so far.

One thing I'd keep in mind is that the difference in quality
and performance between stop mutes is much, much less than
the difference between regular non-transposing mutes, and
stop mutes need be used much less frequently.
