As there are not so many pieces in the classic repertory, any hornplayer in the world, who might be involved in such, should allready know that there are
FOUR WAGNER TUBAS in the three last symphonies by Anton Bruckner. Ooops, How many did he write ? There are nine symphonies & symphonies NO:7 through No:9 employ a 2nd hornquartet, playing the Wagnertuba parts. Be aware about the following regarding Symphony no.7 in E-major. There are six # for the first pair & the parts are to be read in Bb-basso. There are 5 # for the second Tuba pair & they should be read in F-basso (one octave lower than written) (first note to be played should be d on 4rth ledger line below the system. First played note for the first tuba be g# on the 2nd line from bottom. This all has the advantage that the F-Tuba-parts are in trebble clef. No.8 Symphony in c-minor employs the four Wagner tuba players also with playing their horns. The first movement has the four Tubas & horns 5 & 6 play also horns in F, while horns 7 & 8 play horns in Bb-basso. Second movement is all horns only, 7 & 8 again playing in Bb-basso. Horn players five through eight play their Wagner tuba parts exclusively during the third movement, while the FINALE (fourth mov.) required them again to use both instruments and again the horns 7 & 8 play in Bb-basso. Sympnony no.9 in d-minor uses all eight horns for the first & second movement, including a very nice solo for horn no.7 (very exposed but beautiful !) and again later with four very short solo calls. The fifth horn is also required to play some nice short soli. Be aware of the many accidentals as usual with Bruckner, special near the culmination of the first movement. This is unison mostly, so every misfingering be a catastrophe. It is after letter P. At letter V there is a nice solo exchange between horns 5/6 & 7/8. The third & last movement (the symphony remained unfinished) requires that the second horn quartet takes up the Wagner Tubas. The tubas play in Bb-alto & F (regular) in contrary to the other two symphonies. The bass clef be of old notation, resulting one octave higher than the piano bass clef (or modern bass clef). Even here you find a lot of accidentals. As far as I remember, the second quartet has not to take up their horns for the Finale, - except when leaving the stage. Other classic repertory with Wagner Tubas: Alpine Symphony by R.Strauss (4), Sinfonietta by Janacek (horns play also Wagnertuba for a few measures), a piece by a Finish composer, - in Vienna (Philharmonic) they do (did ?) the Tenorhorn part of Heldenleben & Don Quixotte also on Wagnertuba, with one Wagnertuba in Bb only, also Richard Strauss: Josephslegende ballet with a hellish Wagnertuba part (I did it severaltimes !), but it can be transferred to the Basstuba. In the opera there are the four Wagner operas : Rheingold, Walkuere, Siegfried & Goetterdaemmerung, R.Strauss Frau ohne Schatten (quite difficult but not much to play) and a few other rarely played things. That´s for the repertory. Question: Why didn´t you just search on Google for Anton Bruckner Symphonies ? The answers would be found there very easily. The Google search is not only for fun, it is a serious research tool with plenty of answers. As I do not know about your age or playing I dare just one word directed to very young players: "You all know the media INTERNET much better than we elde dor, perhaps (Myself being an exception, perhaps, as I am on the PC since nearly thirty years !). If you want download music or movies, you know where to search. But why not for musicologic questions ? It is the same simple solution. Try it !". By the way, I have published four volumes of studies for Wagnertubas in clear handwritings. These books are partly now rewitten (vo.1 & 2) with FINALE & come with MIDI-files also on CD. Wait another announcement when all four volumes are ready for shipment & get a set for your school or for yourself. ============================================================ =================================================== -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of PatentDan Feigelson Sent: Sunday, December 04, 2005 2:42 PM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Subject: [Hornlist] Dumb question about Wagner tubas in Bruckner's 7th I don't have a score to this piece and have never heard it performed live. Are the Wagner tubas used in the second movement used in addition to the 4 horns, or do the 4 horn players already on stage play Wagner tubas instead of their horns when the score calls for it? --------------------------------- Yahoo!
