Mutes work differently for different horns. Any time you come across
someone with a different mute, or you're playing a different horn, ask
to give it a try. The quest for instrument sound should be one of your
highest priorities. The difficulty is the goal is to sound better, but
not sound different. Confidence and pride in your equipment often adds
more important tonal aspects than having lacquer or not, or the metal
the horn is made from.
I play many horns from my collection but for most of my serious
playing I use my heavy bell Chambers or my Paxman 42, and each horn
uses a different mute. For the Reynolds I use a Jenco aluminum mute
with a wood end plug. It blends well, but the solo sound in an
orchestra is phenominal. I think Jenco normally sells celests, but I've
had this mute since the late sixties, and I don't know if it's
replaceable. This mute is nothing special in the Paxman. What works
best there is a solid copper mute.
It's worth the time to find just the right mute for your horn. Don't
expect a recommendation from me. I'm happy with mine, but I'm always
continuing the search.

Subject: [Hornlist] Rittich Style Mutes
I've played on a Hausotte mute for 6 yesrs and love it. I really enjoy
the
sizzle in the sound but I find that blending with others is much
easier with a
Rittich style mute because well that's what the majority of horn
players that
I've played with have used.
Having said that, I'm considering purchasing a mute of this style for
situations where it would fit the section better and I am seeking
suggestions
on which models to consider.
I will say this, I do NOT like TrumCor mutes, so no need for the
deluge of
TrumCor responses. (Ok, it's not so much that I don't like them but I
know
already that I prefer the Lewis mute over the TrumCor)
The only maker I have had any experience with is the Lewis mute (which
I
liked), but I have heard ordering directly can somtimes be an
adventure. Aside
from TrumCor, I'm can't think of makers of this style of mute.
Where should I start?
Thanks in advance as always,
Chris Tedesco
