The R.O. is great fun. Until other commitments (i.e. a baby) cut into my
playing time recently I was a fairly regular attendee at both the weekend
and Edinburgh courses. I started playing for the R.O. when I moved to
London about 20 years ago - I knew Harry Legge (who founded the R.O.) from
my time in the National Youth Wind Orchestra, which he also conducted.
Generally the standard of the orchestra is very good, as are the conductors
(Lev Parikian & Robert Chasey this time).
The Edinburgh course usually covers lots of interesting music, plus you are
are getting accommodation during the Festival, which is usually very hard
to find, so there are loads of good shows and concerts to see in the
evening. Or you can stay back at base and do chamber music etc. Or there is
always BEER......usually rather too much of it.
I'm sure Jonathan West will pile in with some comments as well when he
reads your email. He's probably going to Edinburgh anyway.
If you live near to London, perhaps you should see if there is still an
empty seat on the forthcoming one-day course, on the 21st May. Stephen Bell
(himself a horn player) is conducting Rachmaninov Piano Concerto #3 and

I would say that you should definitely go to Edinburgh if you have the time
and money to spare.
