I played this years ago for a friend's doctor of music recital at USC.
It is a fine little piece and I enjoyed it. I remember being irked at
the Vivaldi Edition editors, though, for transcribing into C horn what
was obviously an F horn part. Hans is correct: if you play it in the
spirit of the era (in other words, it isn't Ein Heldenleben) it
shouldn't sound muddy. I think it can be done without resorting to a
descant, however, since the tessitura is quite comfortable and it's easy
to throttle back on a standard double. Lightness is especially important
in a viola d'amore concerto because the instrument doesn't have the
"bite" of a modern viola and it's really important not to drown out the
effect of sympathetic strings.
