Hi. What horn to purchase? It's easy; the horn that WORKS for you, be it a Holton, a Conn, a Lawson, whatever (there are so many out there that I have lost count).
And I do not mean trying it out in the store because stores are 'set up' to make their instruments sound better. It is advisable to 'borrow' the instrument (possibly with a small deposit), play it in your own environs and be happy with it. I'd play it in every venue possible, band, orchestra, at home, in the street, in clubs, wherever, and play the crap out of it until you are comfy with it. If you are not comfy after say 3 or 4 weeks; then it may be time to consider a different instrument. Your choice; no one is forcing you to buy although stores love to push their stuff on you; trust me on this. If you are not happy with it; then it is not the right horn. Simply put. The same absolutely goes for your mouthpiece of which a hornist needs to choose ONE and ONE only (more than one of a different size will destroy your embouchure). I've had that happen and it's not fun. best wishes Rachel _______________________________________________ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
