I'd grab it, but maybe that's just me. Several things in favor of that
decision...your teacher is the seller - assume you trust and respect this
person, and he/she thinks well of you. A REALLY good price on a 500k 8D can
be considered an investment - if you find the horn does not work for you,
you s/b able to get all of your money back out of it. I have no personal
experience with Patterson-altered horns, but have talked with Jim at length
several times and worked with him once, and therefore formed an impression
that he can be trusted. Suggest you call him, describe the horn and its
current owner, and ask him about it - what does he think of the horn? I am
pretty sure he'll be honest. You probably already know the answer to this
question, but find out from your teacher why the 8D is being sold... If you
don't want it, tell your teacher to sell it to me!!

Good luck, Fred

Hello -
I emailed the list a few weeks ago asking about problems
playing loudly on my horn. I recieved replies to two effects:
       - Replace the horn
       - Get it fixed
I was all set to get my horn fixed, but my teacher has recently bought
a Paxman, and therefore is selling his 500,000 series Patterson
Front-end conversion 8D. He has offered me a REALLY good price on it.
Questions I have:
        - What are people's experiences with Pattersonised" 8Ds?
        - Would buying such a "nice" horn be a good thing to do as a
soon-to-be high school hornplayer who wants to major in horn
performance in college?
        - Are there any things to look out for on a horn of that age?

I have already played the horn (I like it, a lot!!), and
discussed it with my teacher. The valves don't click, and are pretty
tight, and it is going in for a servicing on Thursday.
Thanks,
Ben
