Wendell, "Lied" not "Leid". Lied means song, hymn, story,
air, but Leid means suffering. So the title is often changed
to "Das Lied ohne Ende" instead "Das von der Erde". "Lied
ohne Ende" means "Song without an End". So a typo gives some
nice ironic touch.

  My favorite Bernstein/Mahler recording is "Das ?eid von
der Erde"  
with the VPO and Deitrich Fischer Dischau and james King.
Absolutely one of the best recordings ever made. Sorry about
