Wendell, the op.11 piano version is not a piano reduction by
Strauss, it is the original version before he orchestrated it. If
you have a look again, you can see some indications for the later
instrumentation left in this autograph. Regarding the "quasi
recitativo" at the beginning: it has been tradition in Vienna to do
it that way, but the soloist must indicate his or her tempo as soon
as he or she arrives at the 5th measures !!
Greetings Hans
Yes, I missed what you said in an earlier post about the Strauss.
Very interesting. I think the Quasi Recitativo thing is important
though, and the book a great resource to have. Somehow I don't think
he would mind if people did the piano version if they didn't have an
orchestra to play with- even in public. I play it with my computer
accompaniment sometimes. What I really object to is those darn Tuba
players playing it all the time. : )
I'm still catching up with my email after spending the last two weeks
working long days and nights getting the proof copy of the book
checked and back to the printer. That's done. Wow, what a relief.
Books within two weeks. I'm having to go back over the threads here
to see what I missed.
Sincerely,
Wendell Rider
