ability of spontaneously hearing music while you read it.
Oh yes, I agree. I see the notes and my fingers move; there is nothing conscious in-between. In fact I usually couldn't NAME the note I was playing if asked, (No, Lawrence, that's not simply because I've got a mouthpiece in the way!) but it's definitely there in my head.

I almost wrote "see the notes, hear the sounds, move the fingers" in my previous mail, but then I realised that I don't actually hear the sound in my head before getting there. Only when I play it. And then, occasionally, my ears disagree with my head. Oops! Usually a lip control problem. :-(

Solution: The Orff system starting in Kindergarten.
Really! The head teacher at my primary school was also the music teacher (Great!) and I remember using a book by Orff. But I seem to remember that the (my?) parents weren't all too keen on it then. Was it too radical in the 60s?
