Some other good advice has already been given. On Holtons, the stop arms
can often be loose on their shafts. Just make sure the big screw in the middle
is snugged down all the way. Sometimes even that doesn't help and you have to
swedge the stop arms tighter (repair shop). Check to make sure the screws
holding the cork holder plates are snug. Probably the noise is from the valve
being too loose in there. Often that condition is caused by repair shops who
"recondition" valves by boiling them in acid. Some tightening of bearings can
be done fairly easily and that will usually take care of most of the noise, but
as has been stated earlier, valves that make a lot of noise are probably
leaking as well so that will still be a problem. You could try some heavier
oil, something like woodwind key oil. Try putting the heavy oil under the
valve cap, lighter oil on the back side of the valves. That won't slow them
down, but will help to kill some of the noise. Good luck!
