"I don't think I have the words to explain to you what drives the amateur, except to say that we do what we do because we love doing it! :o)"

Joe Scarpelli added:
"I agree Valerie. Below is text taken from an email I received from one of today's virtuoso Horn players (the best in my opinion):>
"Of course, to me, you are enjoying horn playing the best way. You don't
have to make a living at it, and can enjoy your 8D on a very elemental,
pleasurable, level. Nothing more fun than playing in a good community
orchestra and playing the way you want, without the pressure of a paycheck
on the line."

Here is another take, from a column by Edith Pearlman, of Brookline, MA Massachusetts that appeared in 6/28/07 Boston Globe. http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2007/06/28/playing_second_fiddle_to_the_viol/ "Amateur musicians are fanatics. Music claims their souls, and they are able to make beautiful sounds. But the beauty they produce doesn't match that produced by the great professionals. Thus they feel glory, power, and sorrow, all at the same time. This is a heady sensation that they seek again and again, forsaking their hearths, forgoing ordinary pleasures, forgetting to take out the trash."
