Right Larry, if one cares very much about his or her horn,
the horn can last for ones full life & longer. There should
be NO wear in the valves, if one keeps them clean. Not by
polishing but by preventing spoilage (brushing the teeth
before playing, no intake of food during intermissions
except when brushing teeth afterwards, no candies or
chocolate or coke during the intermissions, no other acidic
drinks), not over oiling, keeping slide grease away.
Wrapping the horn with your arms, bell up, when walking the
stairs down to the pit or up to the stage, giving the horn a
save rest during intermissions (upon the shrank or in the
case), not hanging the horn on a hook on the music stand,
etc.

The metal will not age, if the horn is water-empties well
before being laid down. There should be no corrosion if the
horn is maintained properly. Rotors can remain tight nearly
unlimited even under professional - real professional -
conditions (see above).

Well, leaving the horn in the trunk of your car during
summer heat, should be a big No-No. Leaving the horn in the
trunk of your car during bitter cold winter nights, another
big No-No.

My 8D that was assembled in 1963 (thus, is 44 years of
age) looks new with all its lacquer, and the best I can tell
from looking at its piping (using light and
mirror) there is no loss of metal anywhere. With no
noticeable deterioration in 44 years, with tight slides, I
wouldn't know how to forecast its useful life span.
