For an alternative to the "usual suspects", Philip Parker at Arkansas Tech
University has written a work entitled "Autumn Images for Tenor, Horn
and Piano". I haven't heard the piece; but I have a score, and it
looks like it would be a very nice work.
Though I don't know this piece, I know several other works of
Philip's. He's really a very good composer and worth a look. A
woodwind quintet of his is particularly worthy of being in the rep.
Our group, Lyrique Quintette, has toured with and recorded it.
Philip's e-mail (I hope he doesn't mind me giving it out) is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Tell him I said hello.
By the way, I would agree that the various Lachner pieces are well
worth your time. There's a short work by Berlioz. Also one by Spohr.
They all generally work with tenor.
You might also look at the Cooke "Nocturnes". Possibly the two Simon
Sargon works as well--"Huntsman, What Quarry" and "The Buck in the
Snow". All spectacular works; but I'm just not sure about how they
would work with tenor.
I imagine a lot of listers would love to know what you come up with.
Happy hunting.
