       Are  the effects of stress helping or hindering your ability to convey 
your  musical ideas? Have you ever wondered why some performances seem to  go 
better than others? Well-known trumpet player and performance psychologist  
William M. Williams, Jr. will be visiting Portland State University  April 
28-30 to present three performance skills workshops and masterclasses,  as well 
as a trumpet recital at PSU's concert hall. 
 
       The  Instrumental Music Club at Portland State University is a 
student-funded,  student-run club that organizes and hosts guest musicians and 
masterclasses  in order to bring music to our community. We would like to 
invite you,  your students, and anyone interested, to attend these performance 
skills  workshops at Portland State University. 

 The workshops are set up as  follows: (all events in room 75 of Lincoln Hall) 

 Monday, April  28:




 11:00am-1:00pm General  Masterclass for all students and types of 
instrumentalists. The workshop  will focus on performance anxiety, and how to 
improve performance in  recitals, concerts, or auditions. Students that attend 
this masterclass  are also encouraged to attend either the Tuesday or Wednesday 
masterclass  as well. 





 Tuesday, April  29:




 12:00pm Trumpet  Recital by Mr. Williams 





 4:00pm-6:00pm This  masterclass will be targeted more to brass players. A Few 
students will  be performing pieces and working with Mr. Williams to 
incorporate new  techniques in their performance. This will be an interactive 
workshop,  as both the performers and observers will be encouraged to 
contribute  observations and ask questions. 
 





 Wednesday,  April 30: 




 11:00am-1:00pm This  masterclass is for all non-brass players, but will cover 
the similar information  as Tuesday's session. 





       Mr.  Williams has collaborated extensively with the well-known sport 
psychologist  Don Greene and is known for his work coaching musicians at the 
conservatory  and professional levels throughout the US and Europe. If you are 
interested  in learning how to improve your performance in recitals, concerts, 
or  auditions, these workshops are for you.

 About  the Artist: William  M. Williams, Jr. 

 William M. Williams, Jr., is  Acting Principal Trumpet of the San Francisco 
Symphony and occupant  of the William G. Irwin Charity Foundation Chair. Prior 
to joining the  SFS in his current role, he performed as principal trumpet with 
orchestras  in the United States, Switzerland, and Spain. In additional to his 
orchestral  career, Mr. Williams frequently performs chamber music throughout 
the  US and Europe; his recent chamber music activities have included concerts  
at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, tours with Toronto's Tafelmusik  
Baroque Orchestra, and performances with the Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt,  
Germany.
 Mr. Williams received a bachelor's  degree and performer's certificate from 
the Eastman School of Music  and a master's degree in psychology from the New 
School for Social Research  in New York. As a member of various ensembles, he 
has recorded for labels  including Arabesque, CBS Masterworks, Analekta, and 
Naxos, and he can  be heard with the San Francisco Symphony on its SFS Media 
recordings  of Mahler's Symphonies 5, 7, and 9.
 Also active as an educator,  Mr. Williams has served as a visiting faculty 
member at the Eastman  School of Music and the University of Michigan. He has 
presented master  classes at numerous institutions in the US and abroad, 
including the  Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, Northwestern 
University,  and various conservatories in Europe and Japan.
 He resides in San Francisco  with his wife, Margot Heiligman, and their son, 
Elias.
