I've followed this conversation on playing on and off the leg, and I
haven't seen an posts about on or off the leg depending on the music.

Umpteen years ago, I saw the Canadian Brass with (I think) David
Ohanian.  I clearly remembered than when his playing was more
ensemble, his horn was on his leg.  When he had the melody, he raised
it off.  Though it was a long time ago, I remember this "technique"
clear as today.
