One group for which I worked often asked us to be in place for a sound check by about 5.00pm - we rarely performed before 10.00pm.
On one memorable occasion I drove over 200 miles at high speed in order to get there by 5.00. I arrived on time, got out my instrument and sat on stage just in time for the sound engineer to say "sorry lads, we've not time". We performed at about 11.00. This was the only group for which I played which did this. Everywhere else I play gives me a starting time and it's up to me to decide how long before that I need to be there, so long as I am actually ready to play at the given starting time - that means set up, warmed up and in my chair with everything I need. Since I need to warm up I usually aim to arrive at very least 30 minutes before that time (and usually longer than that).
