The untagged ways and duplicated nodes are a common scenario, it's great that there's such discoveries that can be made. Perhaps there could be a documentation on these recent common mistakes on the wiki, so that the local and new mappers can avoid and correct these. JOSM pre-loaded USB drives are handy for any mapathon, will share all this info with organisers of geoweek activities.
