I had a problem like this when I first got my printer. After going round and round, tech support told me that there was an issue with static charge buildup on the moving printhead.
There was a hardware fix, essentially a grounding wire, and it was in place on newer production instances of the printer. They swapped me out a new printer, and I haven't had the problem since. -- stan
